ABC - S

I've decided to work on some new stuff for my portfolio! And thought an ABC book would be a good choice to draw lots of different things... I have started with S! Here's what I have so far.

Gravity

So I went to see Gravity last week and was incredibly impressed with it! It was like being in space! So I decided to do a little fan piece based on a sketch I'd done after seeing it.

Slowly working on this!

(I realised I haven't posted for a while)

Lincoln Cathedral Connected!

SO I have recently been working for none other than Lincoln Cathedral! They are starting a project called Lincoln Cathedral Connected and I have been doing some illustration for the Cathedral’s Heritage Lottery Fund stage 1 bid! Fancy! My illustrations of various historical characters will be featured on proposed children's puzzle sheets for them to look at as they tour the cathedral! I don't want to give away too much right now but I will show you my favourite illustration so far: Reg the Cathedral cat! (Who was actually wandering about the grounds during graduation last Thursday!) Here he is reading about Lincoln!

Tuesday 10 September 2013

I've been quiet for a while!

This is because I have started a part time job at a pharmacy and I am also super busy working on a project which I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about or not...We shall see! Keep your eyes peeled for updates! :D (PS. It involves a special cat in a special building...)

Calendar of Tales

So ages ago I did a piece with a man in a fridge for a Neil Gaiman competition!

I was shortlisted! But I did not win... But my work is lurking in the 'virtual experience' website which is pretty cool!

You can find it in the June section, at the side, hiding behind the trees!

Here is a print screen if you're having trouble with the site!

Front Cover of Zine - Redo

I didn't like my original cover so I chose to redo it. It's pretty similar to how it was before (leaves and circles) but rather than just three leaves blobbed on a page, it's more of a leafy scene. I like drawings trees.

Update

This is a mock up of all the extra items that go with my poetry booklet! Fold out poster, Bookmarks with stickers (which arrived today so I can start to put those together) and a fold out book.

Can't believe how fast this year has gone!

All I have left to do now is revisit each piece, tweaking things I'm not happy with, designing a cover and end papers for my booklet/zine and getting everything printed and made for the show!!

After working hard on pieces for aaaages I always feel a bit odd at this point where everything is starting to be finished, for some reason.

Anyway, business cards are also starting to arrive so my next post will probably be to do with those!

Bees

I have enjoyed illustrating this poem. I think because I like the last word... 'polleny'.

Friday 12 April 2013

More Updates!

The next poem I chose is about bees! There will be a single page with the poem on (below) and then I am going to make some bookmarks (second below) and some little bee stickers to stick on the bookmarks! (bottom)

I think this is my best idea yet, although maybe I just like stickers...?

Wednesday 10 April 2013

Update!

Today I have been planning my next page and also planning in my head (and through the power of digital sketches) what business cards I might get printed...

(I'm not going to write that I just wanted to fill space...or am I?)

I just want to draw bees.

The Big Sleep

Here are both my entries for the Penguin/Puffin book cover competition.
Going to attempt to work out how to arrange the PDF version to submit and get it sent before the deadline on the 9th!

John Hegley DPS

Another DPS, for a tiny poem by John Hegley. Just got to add the poem to the page and decide whether I like this background or a darker colour...

Only 2 more DPS's to do, another mini item and then all the endpapers, covers etc to do. That and the two remaining book cover competitions...

Cat Poster

This is a fold out poster to go with the imaginary book I'm imagining for my FMP. Loosely based on the poem My Cat Plumduff by Charles Causley.

Work in Progress - Fold out poster

FMP continued

This is an idea for another DPS for a very short poem by John Hegley.

More on this when I start working on it...

Below is what I'm working on this week. For each poet I've picked  I am making a couple of DPS's and then an extra bit (like the fold out monkey book). I was going to do another pull out book but then thought back to the first year when we made fold out posters and thought this format would fit what I want to do. SO this is sketchbook work for a fold out A3 poster based on the poem My Cat Plumduff by Charles Causley about a cat that prefers to sit up a tree. I have turned it into an excuse to draw lots of cats...by making it into a poster showing where Plumduff attemps to sleep before finding his perfect spot.

Also, my original plan was to actually make the book of poems but as time has gone on I have realised I may have to cut down on the number of pages/poems I wanted to illustrate because I think I've set myself far too much work for the time scale. So there are three poem/illustrations for Spike Milligan, but I've had to cut down to two each for the other two poets I picked. Along with 3 mini items to go with each poet. Instead of making a proper book (which was a bit ambitious) it might be close to a little booklet... Either way I can't put a booklet or book on an exhibition wall, just the double page spreads so I suppose it doesn't matter too much... (I'm waffling on trying to work this out now)

Mrs McPhee

Final idea for page to accompany a Charles Causley poem about a woman that eats so much duck she turns into one.
